A documentary on the life of renowned Los Angeles ­based Trans Latina Activist and leader, Bamby Salcedo. Turning her daunting personal challenges and barriers into the very basis of her activism, the film follows her unlikely and transcendent rise into becoming the effective social advocate and role model that she is today. Her work is shown giving voice and visibilty to not only the Transgender community, but also to the multiple, overlapping communities her life has touched (Latina, immigrant, HIV+, youth, and LGBT communities).

GLOBE supports Low Wage Worker’s Airport Rally

On MLK Day we rallied with 500 workers to fight for fair wages, specifically in NYC airport — demanding a pay increase and a good faith step declaring MLK Day a paid holiday for all airport workers.

THE RESULT? The Port Authority agreed to make MLK Day a paid holiday for workers and wrote a letter to all major airlines demanding that wages immediately go up to meet the federal standard that President Obama is trying to institute: $10.10 per hour! So far, American Airlines and Delta Airlines have agreed to comply with the letter but both JetBlue and United Airways have been silent.

So airport workers will take action again on April 4th, 2014 and we will head out to join them with 200 Make the Road New York members. Help us support all the LGBTQ workers who make our city run!

Breakfast will be served at 8:15am and we will go together to JFK in buses at 9am, and we will wrap up at 11am!

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), sometimes called domestic abuse or family/dating violence, affects LGBTQ communities as much as it affects heterosexual and cisgender communities. But what does it look like for us? If we know it’s happening to us or someone we love, what can we do and who can we go to?

These questions and more will be answered in an interactive workshop (not lecture!) presented by Tashita Amezcua representing the New York City Anti-Violence Project!

GLOBE loves to have fun, socialize, and increase our political education but we also know we must make time to have difficult and potentially life-saving discussions. The New School is the preeminent university where design and social research drive approaches to studying issues of our time, such as democracy, urbanization, technological change, economic empowerment, sustainability, migration, and globalization. This spring, Project Africa presents Design Africa, an innovative conference showcasing new perspectives on communication, infrastructure, technology, fashion, and transdisciplinary design in Africa. Through this one-day conference, we aim to spotlight design products and approaches from Africa’s emerging design communities. We also seek to explore a number of questions, such as:

– How is design perceived as a tool for problem solving by the larger population?

– What role does design play in Africa, in promoting critical thinking and awareness about scalar systemic change?

– What messages are being pushed across the continent by African designers?

– How can different forms of design be combined to catalyze system change in Africa?

– Are designers in the diaspora participating in innovation processes and capacity building?

– How are initiatives like Design Indaba in Africa or diaspora design organizations influencing developmental interventions?

Artist Details:

Mars Dixon is a mixed queer originally from Arkansas. He is the singer/guitarist of Aye Nako and the father of Broccolini.

Hannah Morrow is a multi-disciplinary feminist performing artist living in Montreal. Using solo and collective processes, Hannah digs for truths about feminism and femininity. She presents her findings in durational performance art, cabaret performances, political satire, and immersive nights of installation and performance. Her Meta-Drag Queen alter ego, Lilac Poussez, is the newest incarnation of Hannah’s use of live performance to present triumphant, lavish feminine beauty while simultaneously confronting her audiences with notions of feminine experience that disturb any sense of complacency within it, and point to new ways of conceptualizing gendered life.

Bryn Kelly is a performing artist, and has made theater ranging from Shakespeare and Greek tragedy to new plays and devised work, with transgender ensembles. These productions have appeared in New York at the Brecht Forum, The LaMama Experimental Theatre Club, Dixon Place Experimental Theater Lab, and The Nuyorican Poet’s Cafe; in San Francisco at the African American Art and Culture Complex; and at Portland State University, Swarthmore College, Barnard College, Smith College, the University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University; and many many scuzzier places. She was a founding member of Theater Transgression, a New York-based transgender multimedia performance collective, and a co-creator of the Fully Functional Cabaret, a thunderous touring theatrical love letter to trans women. brynkelly.com

Ro Garrido is a Queens based artist born in Lima, Peru. Ro is a self-taught, interdisciplinary artist whose work grapples with themes of memory, intimacy, and identity. Through collage, mixed media, sculpture, photography, writing, and performance, Ro seeks to build a creative practice that is able to untangle and transform in various ways. Ro’s work has been featured at the Leslie Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art, Goddard College, Jack Studios, and Brooklyn Arts Exchange. Lettie Laughter is an indigenous cis femme, with a Cancer sun, Gemini moon, & Aquarius rising. Also, lots of Pluto influence. This means being grounded is often challenging, they have lots of feelings & like to talk about them, & are really good at helping die what needs to die. Their time is currently spent learning how to bring joy back to their body, how to relax & play, & how to claim their place in the femmeiverse as a healer. Lettie dreams of someday (soon) being surrounded by chosen-fam, all the babies, & all the stories! Poet through & through (& playwriting flirt), they work to peel the archived pages from their body & the memory of their Ancestors. All in all, Lettie is wooing a life that loves them back!

Afrodeezee is a multi-faceted QTPOC musician and poet who hails from Kansas. When he is not busy trying to make rent as a cute barista, Afrodeezee occupies his time with FIERCE, Audre Lorde Project’s TransJustice Community School, dancing alone in his room, playing video games, and being as queer as humanly possible.

Heels on Wheels is a group of interdisciplinary performing artists who create performance-based cultural works and community events that have a feminist and radical agenda, are produced from sites of femme/inine-positive queer embodiment, and reveal the power in under-represented communities.

Our events use theatre to incite wonder, joy, critique, and dialogue; to bring visibility and complexity to diverse experiences; and to strengthen LGBTQ cultural communities in NYC and beyond.

We are a multiracial & working-class led queer organization committed to anti-oppression and activism as art, as well as in our art.
